Week 9 Reading Notes: Brer Rabbit, Part B

Here are my notes for Brer Rabbit, part 2.

1: Mr. Fox and the Deceitful Frogs
-Brer Terrapin has just escaped from Brer Fox into the water after BF tried to drown him; BT gloats from below the water; Brer Frog hears BT gloating and tells BF that if he looks into the water, he'll see another fox; BF looks down at the water and sees another fox (he doesn't know this is his reflection) and when he goes to shake the fox's hand, he falls into the water; he eventually gets out but is upset about getting wet

2: Old Mr. Rabbit, He's a Good Fisherman
-one day, Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer Bear and Brer Coon are clearing out a field to plant corn; BR gets tired and searches for a place to rest away from everyone; he finds a well with a bucket and decides to rest in the bucket; when he hops in, though, the bucket starts going down and lands at the bottom of the well
-BF comes along and sees what happened; BF asks BR what he's doing, and BR says he's fishing; BR tells BF to come down and help him catch some fish; BF agrees and jumps in the other bucket, and his weight pulls BR's bucket out of the well as his goes down; BR goes back to everyone and tells them BF is messing around in a well

3: Mr. Rabbit Meets His Match Again
-BR and Brer Buzzard go in together on some crops, and at the harvest later in the year BR took more than his fair share and didn't give any to BB; around BB, BR pretends that he didn't get any crops either; one day, BB asks BR to come help him work in a gold mine he found across the river; BR can't figure out how to get across the river, so BB offers to carry him
-BR thinks something might be up, so he tells BB that he has his own gold mine and he wants them to work on it first before they work on BB's gold mine; BB shakes his wings and laughs, nearly dropping BR and scaring him; BR admits about taking more crops than he should have and apologizes

4: A Story About the Little Rabbits
-BF goes to BR's house when he and his wife aren't there and finds all of his kids; BF thinks about eating them but then remembers Brer Wolf, who got boiled alive in a box for going after BR's family (he decides he's going to make up an excuse to eat them); BF asks the kids to get him a piece of sugar cane, and they tried but they couldn't break it; the birds outside tell the kids to bite it and it will break, so they do and they give BF the sugar cane
-BF gives the kids a sifter and tells them to go fetch him some water in it; they take it to the river but the water just runs right through it; the birds tell them to fill it with moss and clay and then put water in it, so they do and they take the water back to BF
-BF starts to get upset; BF tells them to put a large log on the fire; the kids try to lift it but can't; the birds tell them to roll the log instead of trying to lift it, so they do and they put it on the fire for BF; BR shows up and tells BF he should stay for dinner because BW isn't around anymore; BF gets scared and runs home

5: Mr. Rabbit and Mr. Bear
-BF plants a peanut patch; BR likes peanuts, so he steals some every once in a while from BF's patch; this makes BF upset, so he sets a trap where he knows BR is getting in; BR gets caught in the trap the next day, and while he's trying to get out, Brer Bear comes along
-BB asks BR why he's hanging from a tree, and BR tells BB he's getting paid a dollar a minute to keep the crows out of BF's peanut patch; he asks BB if he wants to take his job because he knows he has a big family; BB takes BR's place in the trap, and BR runs to BF's house and tells him that the peanut thief is caught in the trap; BF takes a stick and hits BB; BR runs home before BB can catch him

6: Mr. Terrapin Shows His Strength
-many of the animals go to Miss Meadows's house as she makes molasses; each animal has their own job to do while they're there; Miss Meadows tells all the animals that they have to play nice with each other while they're there, and they agree; while they're all sitting by the fire, BR tells everyone he's the fastest; BF tells everyone he's the smartest; BW tells everyone he's the most helpful; BB tells everyone he's the strongest; BT just sits there and says nothing for a while, but then says he's better at everything then all of them
-the other animals tell him to prove it, so he tells them to get a rope and let him sit in a puddle and see if BB can pull him out; they agree, and BT one end of the rope to the creek and tells them to wait in the forest, and when he calls, try to pull him; BT dives in the water and ties the rope to a root in the creek bed; BB tries to pull BT in but he can't; all the animals join in but they can't pull BT in, so they all give up

7: The Story of the Deluge
-all the animals of Africa decide one day to have an assembly so they can hear complaints and come up with solutions; an elephant accidentally steps on a crawfish and crushes him; this makes the other crawfishes upset, and they try to complain about it to the rest of the crowd but no one can hear them because of all the arguing going on
-the crawfishes get angry and dig down in the dirt until they unleashed the fountains of the earth and caused a huge flood, drowning everyone at the assembly because they thought they were better than the crawfishes
