Week 13 Reading Notes: King Arthur, Part B

Here are my notes.

1: Sir Galahad and the White Knight
-Sir Galahad is out on his quest when he stops for the night to sleep at a white abbey; there he meets with two knights who tell him that within the abbey is a shield that no knight can hang around his neck without being dead in 3 days; the next day, after mass, a monk shows Sir Galahad the shield and says that only the worthiest knight can carry it; one of the knights took the shield just to see if he could carry it; that knight meets a white knight in battle on a field and the shield didn't protect him; the white knight sends the shield back to the abbey and to Sir Galahad; Sir Galahad takes the shield and rides out to meet the white knight, who tells him how he got the shield; Sir Galahad goes back tot he abbey and the monk takes him to a knight's tomb; Sir Galahad then leaves and restarts his quest for the holy grail

2: Sir Lancelot's Vision
-Lancelot is riding through the forest when he comes upon a old church; he decides not to go in, so he makes camp outside the church near a cross; while Lancelot is half asleep, he sees two men carrying a sick knight come to the cross and ask to be blessed; a table appears with the holy grail on it, and the sick man drinks from it and is healed; the holy grail and table go back into the church, but Lancelot can't follow bc he feels his sins weighing too heavily on him; the men stand around Lancelot and talk about him; eventually, the healed knight takes Lancelot's armor and horse and they leave; Lancelot wakes up in the morning and finds all his stuff gone, and curses himself for his sins as he walks away

3: The Adventure of Sir Percivale
-Sir Percivale sits under a tree and relaxes after a battle that Sir Galahad saved him from; a knight rides by on a horse and is followed by a yeoman, who asks Percivale if he saw a knight ride by; Percivale says yes, and the man tells him that the knight stole his horse; Percivale rides after the knight and tries to fight him, but the knight kills Percivale's horse and gets away; later that night, Percivale wakes up to a woman who offers him her horse if Percivale will do what she asks when she calls on him; Percivale rides off into the mountains and eventually stops for the night; the next morning he sees a fight between a snake and a lion; he kills the snake and the lion sleeps near him

4: Sir Lancelot and the Five Hundred Knights
-Lancelot is riding along and comes upon a castle with hundreds of tents and pavilions; he sees 500 knights riding around and fighting, half in black and half in white; Lancelot decides to help the knights in black, but eventually he gets tired and has to rest in the woods; he comes across an abbey, where a nun tells him that he had gotten tired in the battle because he was fighting against holy knights (white knights) and on the side of knights who had sinned

5: Sir Gawaine and the Hermit
-Sir Gawaine is riding along until he comes across Sir Ector de Maris, who he stops to talk with; they come across a church, and hear a voice say that they can't continue in their quest to find the holy grail until they repent (the voice is assumed to be a hermit); Gawaine and Ector leave

6: The Adventure of Sir Bors
-Sir Bors is riding and comes across a man riding on a donkey; they ride together to a church, where Bors confesses his sins; the hermit tells Bors that he can't eat again until he sits at the table of the holy grail; the hermit also tells Bors he has to wear a scarlet coat until he finishes the quest; Bors leaves and goes on many adventures; on one occasion, he nearly kills his brother but a voice stops him from committing the sin; the voice tells him to go to the sea and meet with Sir Percivale

7: Sir Galahad and the Mysterious Ship
-Sir Galahad is resting at a church; he meets a woman who tells him to come with her, and she will show him the best adventure ever; he goes with her to the sea, where they meet with Sir Percivale and Sir Bors on a ship; the group comes across an abandoned ship and board it; the woman reveals that she is Sir Percivale's sister; on the ship they find a mysterious sword, but no one can pick it up but Sir Galahad; they go on many adventures from there until the sister dies, and they send her body off in the boat

8: Sir Lancelot and Sir Galahad
-Sir Lancelot rides to the sea, and a voice tells him to get into a boat and sail until he finds another boat; he comes across a ship and boards it and finds the dead body of Percivale's sister; Lancelot reads the letter Percivale left with her detailing all of their adventures; Lancelot stays with the boat until one day Sir Galahad comes by; they live together in the ship for 6 months (bc Lancelot is Galahad's father) until a white knight comes along and tells Galahad he must continue the quest for the holy grail; Galahad continues the quest and Lancelot returns to Camelot

9: Sir Galahad and the Graal
-Sir Galahad meets up with Percivale and Bors and goes on the quest; one day they come across a ship and board it bc Galahad has a vision of the grail; the ship sails to the city of Sarras; they come across a crippled man, and Galahad heals him; this news gets to the king of the city, who throws the three knights in prison for a year; after a year, the king is dying, so he sends for the knights and apologizes for throwing them in jail; he makes Galahad king; after a year, Galahad meets a bishop, who tells Galahad that he is ready to see what he has wanted to see; Galahad kneels at the table of the grail and angels carry his soul to heaven (he dies) and sees the holy grail; Percivale and Boris leave the city; Percivale dies a while after (he becomes a hermit and repents for his sins) and is buried next to Galahad; Boris goes back to Camelot and tells Lancelot what happened

10: The End of Arthur
-after a battle with Sir Mordred (who he killed), King Arthur lays wounded on the battlefield; he tells Sir Bedivere to take Excalibur and throw it in the lake, but Bedivere doesn't and hides it by a tree; Arthur can tell Bedivere is lying to him and hid the sword instead of putting it in the lake; Bedivere eventually does as Arthur says and throws the sword into the lake; the lady of the lake catches it and takes it beneath the water; Arthur tells Bedivere to put him in a boat and let him sail away, and he does it (Arthur dies); eventually everyone dies, Sir Lancelot last
