Week 9 Reading Notes: Brer Rabbit, Part A

This week, I'm reading about Brer Rabbit. My notes are below!

1: Brer Rabbit and the Calamus Root
-Brer Fox is trying to make a plan to catch Brer Rabbit when Brer Rabbit comes along; Brer Fox stops Brer Rabbit and says he wants to talk to him; BR says BF has to stand far away though bc he has bad fleas that morning
-BF tells BR that he talked to Brer Bear the other day and BB got upset at him because BF and BR aren't friends; BR invites BF to dinner at his house the next day so they can start being friends
-the next day, BR and his wife prepare dinner; BF's children say they see BF coming, but they wait and wait and he never comes to the door; BR looks out the front door and sees BF hiding behind it, waiting; BR goes back inside, sits down and sings
-the next day, BF sends Mr. Mink to BR to tell him he was too sick to come to dinner the day before; BR agrees to have him over for dinner again; BR goes to BF's house for dinner and finds him sitting at the table, wrapped in blankets with no dinner made; BR tells BF he can't eat chicken for dinner without calamus root, so he walks out pretending to go get some and hides by the front door; BF tries to catch him but is unsuccessful

2: The Wonderful Tar-Baby Story
-angry at BR for the calamus root trick, BF mixes tar and turpentine into a "tar-baby" and sits it in the road; BR comes by so BF hides nearby; BR comes upon the tar-baby; BR starts talking to the tar-baby (obviously not getting any answers); BR gets upset because the tar-baby won't talk to him, so he hits it and his fist gets stuck to it; this makes BR angrier, so he hits it again and gets his other fist stuck to it; eventually his feet and head get stuck to it too
-BF comes out of hiding, laughing, and tells BR that he has to have dinner with him now

3: Why Mr. Possum Loves Peace
-Brer Possum and Brer Coon eat dinner together and walk around the forest; they come across Brer Dog, who runs at them and tries to attack them; BP pretends to be dead; BC scares BD off and he runs away; BC runs off, and BP gets up and does the same
-the next day, BP says hi to BC but BC doesn't reply; BP asks him what's wrong, and BC replies that he doesn't run with cowards; this makes BP upset, and he defends himself by telling BC he was just waiting for the right time to join the fight; BP says he's ticklish, and he laid down bc when BD got close his nose tickled him so he was laughing, but he would fight fine if BD couldn't tickle him

4: How Mr. Rabbit Was Too Sharp for Mr. Fox
-BR is still tangled up with the tar-baby; BF gloats at BR for getting stuck and tells him that he's going to light the tar-baby on fire and barbecue him; BR tells BF that he doesn't care what BF does to him, as long as he doesn't fling him in the brier patch; BF is petty and flings BR in the brier patch
-BF waits for a while to see what will happen, and he hears someone call his name; he sees BR up ahead on the road, combing himself free of tar; this makes BF upset bc BR has fooled him and escaped again

5: Mr. Fox is Outdone by Mr. Buzzard
-BF has BR trapped inside a tree; BF goes to get an axe to cut the tree down and has Brer Buzzard stand guard of the tree while he goes; BB stands by the tree until BF comes back; BF starts cutting down the tree while BB stands by and tells him that he knows BR is in there; BF gets almost all the way through the tree without seeing BR; BB keeps telling him BR is in there, and laughing
-BF starts to think BB is tricking him, so he has BB stick his head inside the hole in the tree to look for BR; when he does, BF grabs him; BF tries to hit him against the ground but BB gets loose and flies away

6: Mr. Wolf Makes a Failure
-BF is upset that he can't catch BR, and walks along the road one day, coming upon Brer Wolf; BW asks BF what's wrong, and they talk about BR; BW and BF make a plan to lure BR into BF's house by pretending BF is dead, and then they'll catch him
-BW goes to BR's house and tells BR that he has bad news, BF has died; BR decides he'll go by BF's house to see what's going on; BR gets to the house and sees that no one else is there, so he suspects something is up; BR talks to himself while he creeps up to BF's bed (where he's laying still) and says that real dead people raise up their leg and shout when people come to see them; BF does just that, showing BR that he's alive, so BR runs home and escapes

7: Mr. Fox Tackles Old Man Tarrypin
-BF comes across Brer Terrapin while walking along the road; BF strikes up a conversation with BT and asks him how he's doing, what's wrong, etc.; BT tells BF that a man set fire to his field the other day, causing his shell to get burnt and smoke to get in his eyes; BF asks if it burnt his tail off, and BT says no and shows it to him; BF grabs him by the tail and holds him (BF is upset at BT for a trick he and BR pulled on him)
-BF takes BT to the creek and tries to drown him; BT yells to BF to let go of the stump root he's holding and help him bc he's drowning (he's doing this to confuse BF into letting him go); BF eventually lets go of his tail, thinking it's the root, and BT escapes

8: The Awful Fate of Mr. Wolf
-after BW and BF made that plan to catch BR, BW had been after BR; BW would tear down the houses BR made and each time he did BW would kill one of BR's kids; BR has some carpenters build him a house out of rock and wood, with a hole in the basement where his kids could hide if BW came to the house to trash it
-one day, BW runs into BR's house, covered in mud; BW asks BR to help him bc he's being chased by dogs and needs to hide; BR tells BW to hide in a chest, and when BW gets into it BR locks him inside; BR eventually dumps boiling water on BW through a hole in the top of the chest, and the story ends with BW's hide on BR's back porch
